Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We are back in Olympia for the fast-paced, vicious race of the 2018 legislative session. And, let me tell you, this is going to be a bad year!
The majority party has already started to rollback some of the hard work accomplished over the last several years. In 2017, Senate Republicans stood-up to protect taxpayers with a proposal for new rules extending the states popular two-thirds taxes rule. The taxpayer protection measure requires a two-thirds legislative vote for any tax increase. This week, the Democrats tore it down.
This means it will no longer take a sixty percent vote to implement taxes. It means a simple majority vote will move any legislation proposing taxes onto the next stages of the legislative process. This will make it extremely hard for us to fight against any taxes the majority party sees fit to impose. By moving to eliminate this voting rule, the majority party is already breaking promises you demanded we keep as lawmakers. This one move is ‘stacking the deck’ of things to come. Hold on everyone! It’s going to be a bumpy ride!
Usually my weekly updates inform you about the happenings of the Legislature, what I am currently working on, and any other important information I feel you should know about. With the already dismal tone of this session, this is not just a weekly update. This is a call for action!
As your state representative, I am your voice in Olympia. It’s my job to stand up for you! With the Democrats setting the current tone, our political climate has changed. Now, more than ever, we need to stand together for our core beliefs and values.
