Rep. Morgan Irwin’s statement on the tragic death of Deputy Daniel A. McCartney

On Sunday evening, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department lost one of their own. Deputy Daniel A. McCartney, 34, of Yelm, responded to a residential burglary call in the Frederickson area. As he arrived on the scene, two men fled the area. Deputy McCartney was fatally shot chasing the burglary suspects. He died in the line of duty protecting the citizens of Pierce County.
Rep. Morgan Irwin, R-Enumclaw, provided the following statement on this tragic act.
“Today is a somber day for our law enforcement family across Washington state. One of our brothers in blue made the ultimate sacrifice. He lost his life fighting for, and protecting, his community. Deputy Daniel A. McCartney is a hero.
“My thoughts and prayers are especially with Deputy McCartney’s wife and sons, ages 4, 6, and 9. I can only imagine what they are feeling with the news their hero will never return home. May you be comforted and find peace in the midst of this horrific circumstance.
“I had the opportunity to speak with Gov. Jay Inslee about this incident today. His first words to me were how devastated he is about the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department losing one of their finest. He emphasized these acts of violence against our state’s law enforcement officers need to stop. We must do more. I wholeheartedly agree with our governor. I’ll continue to work alongside my fellow lawmakers to make a change and find solutions to protect those who selflessly protect us.
“And, finally to all the brave men and women of law enforcement across our state, who go to work each day as the protectors of society, never knowing if that day may be their last, thank you for your service.”
